Comparative Gov.

Chapter 2: learn about different types of governments

TermDefinition
Direct Democracy All people in a community have an equal say in making decisions.
Representative Democracy People elect representatives to serve and make decisions on their behalf. Also known as a republic.
Democracy Gov. ruled directly by people OR through elected representatives. Also called a republic.
Oligarchy Rule by the few, based on wealth, or intelligence.
Theocracy Government in which religious leaders are also political leaders, and mix the two together.
Monarchy Rule by royalty-power comes from a family line such as a king or prince.
Dictatorship Power is concentrated in the hands of one person who exercises total control.
Constitutional Monarchy Form of government whereby the power or role of a monarch is limited by law.
Parliamentary Democracy Gov whereby the people elect representatives to a national assembly. The assembly then elects the head of gov called the prime minister.
Presidential Democracy Gov in which the voters chose their head of gov (executive)as well as members of a Congress (legislative)
Single-Party State Gov in which only one political party rules under its constitution.
Anarchy The absence of government.
Unitary System A government whereby a national government exercises power all the power.
Federal System A government whereby power is split between a national government and smaller regional governments.
Authoritarian Government Government style whereby power is held by one person or a small group, not accountable to the people.
Command Economy Economic system whereby the the government controls the means of production, and makes most economic decisions.
Traditional Economy Economic system whereby all the major economic decisions are made based on history & customs.
Market Economy Economic decision whereby all major economic decisions are made by the interaction of producers & consumers.
