What are some examples of the sport industry? Professional, youth, olympic, recreational, etc.
What are the top sports in the world? Soccer, Football, Baseball, Formula 1, Basketball, Hockey
What is sport governance? The exercise of power and authority in sport organizations
What does governance determine? Mission, membership, eligibility, regulatory power
What are the 3 levels of governance? Local, national, international
What is regulatory power? the ability to enforce rules, impose punishments
What are the types of external powers? Proximal (close) and distal (general)
What is a proximal environment? task or operating, close environment
What is a distal environment? removed, beyond an organization's control (war, weather, etc)
What are internal powers? specific policies and procedures
What are the 5 Rs of good governance? Regulations, Rules, Rankings, Records, Results
What are the organizational units in governance? general assemblies, executive committees, standing committees, Ad Hoc committees, executive staff
What is the difference between the 3 types of governance committees? Executive = create agenda for general assembly Standing = specific responsibilities (rules, events, awards) Ad Hoc = temporary, special events (5Ks, olympics)
What is a governance constitution? document that outlines organization's core principles
What are governance bylaws? Tells organization how to conduct its nature, operational in nature, what procedures need to be followed
What are the 3 reasons to study sport governance? understand the big picture understand how governance fits into sport management understand how governance will apply to your career
