Writing Formula Rule
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Metal + nonmetal | salt |
nonmetal oxide + water | ternary acid (ex: HSO4, HCO3, HPO4) |
metal oxide + water | metal hydroxide ex: Cu(OH)2 |
metal chloride + oxygen | metal chlorate |
nonmetal oxide + metal oxide | salt that has polyatomic ion in it |
metal oxide + carbon dioxide | metal carbonate |
compound + element already in compound | compound with element at higher oxidation state |
metal + oxygen | metal oxide ex: BeO |
what are the possible results of decomposition? | -two elements -an element and a compound -two compounds |
metallic carbonates break down | metallic oxides and carbon dioxide |
metallic chlorates break down ex: NaClO3 | metallic chlorides and oxygen |
metallic sulfites break down ex: Na2SO3 | metallic oxides and sulfur dioxide |
hydrated salts decomposes | salt and water |
hydrogen peroxide decomposes | water and oxygen gas |
sulfurous acid decomposes | water and sulfur dioxide |
carbonic acid decomposes | water and carbon dioxide |
What are the reactants in a combustion reaction? | hydrocarbons and oxygen gas |
What are the products in a combustion reaction? | carbon dioxide and water |
What is the state of matter of nonmental oxides? | gas |
What is the state of matter of metal oxides? | solid |
What is the state of matter of salts? | solid |
What is the state of matter of water? | liquid (if you didn't say liquid I am very disappointed in you) |
What is the state of matter of acid? | aqueous |
What are the diatomic molecules? | hydrogen, oxygen, fluorine, bromine, iodine, nitrogen, chlorine H2, O2, F2, Br2, I2, N2, Cl2 (HONClBrIF: honkle-brif) (Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer) |
-ide | hydro___ic acid |
-ite | __ous acid |
-ate | ___ic acid |
OC one | meth |
OC two | eth |
OC three | prop |
OC four | but |
What do carbon single bonds end with? | ane |
What do carbon double bonds end with? | ene |
What do carbon triple bonds end with? | yne |
When there are more than one triple or double bond in a organic compound, what do you do? | use the full number prefix and then put a number prefix in front of the ending ex: (pentene becomes pentadiene) |
How do you name molecular compounds? | -always put a prefix for the second molecule -only put a prefix for the first molecule if it is more than one |
If a compound name starts with hydro and ends with ic then what does it have? | an element (probably from the periodic table) with a name that ends in -ide |
What does the prefix bi- do? | -Adds an H but doesn't cross charges -As a whole, the polyatomic ion has a -1 charge Ex: Bisulfate = HSO4 |
What does thio- do? | -Takes one oxygen and adds it to the other element Ex: Thiosulfate: SO4 -> S2O3 |
