matter physical substance in general
physical property A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition
extensive property a property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample
intensive property a property of matter that depends only on the type of matter in a sample and not on the amount
ductility the ability of a material to be drawn or deformed without fracture
malleability the property of a metal's ability to be distorted below compression.
volume the amount of 3D space a substance or object occupies
compressibility the measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure
density mass of a unit volume of a material substance
evaporation process by which an element or compound transitions from its liquid state to its gaseous
sublimation the transition from the solid phase to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase
vaporization conversion of a substance from the liquid or solid phase into the gaseous phase
element any substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by ordinary chemical processes
compound any substance composed of identical molecules consisting of atoms of two or more chemical elements
heterogeneous mixture a mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture.
homogeneous mixture Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition throughout its bulk
atom smallest unit into which matter can be divided without the release of electrically charged particles.
