matter | physical substance in general |
physical property | A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition |
extensive property | a property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample |
intensive property | a property of matter that depends only on the type of matter in a sample and not on the amount |
ductility | the ability of a material to be drawn or deformed without fracture |
malleability | the property of a metal's ability to be distorted below compression. |
volume | the amount of 3D space a substance or object occupies |
compressibility | the measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure |
density | mass of a unit volume of a material substance |
evaporation | process by which an element or compound transitions from its liquid state to its gaseous |
sublimation | the transition from the solid phase to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase |
vaporization | conversion of a substance from the liquid or solid phase into the gaseous phase |
element | any substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by ordinary chemical processes |
compound | any substance composed of identical molecules consisting of atoms of two or more chemical elements |
heterogeneous mixture | a mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture. |
homogeneous mixture | Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition throughout its bulk |
atom | smallest unit into which matter can be divided without the release of electrically charged particles. |
