Managing Creativity

Define Creativity The development of ideas about products, practices, services, or procedures that are novel and potentially useful to the organization
Define Innovation the implementation of new ideas at the individual, group, or organizational level
Characteristics of creative people tolerance of risk, cognitive creativity skills, domain-specific knowledge, and intrinsic motivation
What are personality traits of creative ppl? they tend to be self-confident, independent, attracted to complexity, tolerant of ambiguity, persistent, and intuitive. Like to learn, are flexible, have broad interests, and a concern for achievement
What are Cognitive Creativity Skills? the ability to think creatively, generate alternatives, engage in divergent thinking, and suspend judgement
Define Heuristics Heuristics are incomplete guidelines or rules of thumb
What is Kirton's Adaptation-Innovation Theory? assumes that ppl are predisposed to a particular style of creative problem solving. "Adaptors" prefer structure and likely to stay within rules without questioning, while "Innovators" are comfortable with less structure
What are pre-requisites for creativity? risk-takers, cognitive creativity skills, heuristics, domain-specific knowledge, and intrinsic motivation
Define Domain Specific Knowledge it is acquired via education, training, experience, and knowledge about a particular context
Define Intrinsic Motivation the extent to which ppl are excited about an activity and do it for the sake of the activity itself rather than for external rewards
How to increase creativity at work Screen for creativity, job complexity, resources such as time, clear organizational goals, instructing employees to be creative, recognize and reward creativity, encourage risk-taking, grant autonomy, productivity, supportive supervision,
How to increase creativity at work pt 2 participative leadership, internal diversity/interaction, diverse teams, supportive climate, organizational culture, flexible flat structures (non-hierarchical organization), contact with customers (long term relationships with customers)
Define Creativity goals creativity goals are either "a stated standard that an individual's output should be creative (ie novel and appropriate) or that individuals should attempt to engage in activities that could lead to creative outcomes (ie, flexible thought, data gather."
List 4 stages of the Creative Process after being triggered by a problem or perceived need Preparation (gather information), Incubation (reflective thought), Illumination (solution to the problem, often while doing an unrelated activity), Verification (tested by logic and evaluated more rigorously)
Define Flow a state of effortless concentration/enjoyment. Key elements of flow are clear goals at every step, immediate feedback to one's actions, balance between challenge and skill, merged action/awareness, no worry of failure, distorted sense of time
What are two techniques for unleashing creativity ? Brainstorming and Brainwriting
What are the rules for brainstorming ? Expressiveness (say whatever ideas come to mind), Nonevaluation (no criticism allowed), Quantity (produce as many ideas as possible), Building (expand on other ppl's ideas)
What is Brainwriting? a set period for individuals to write their own ideas, then shared with a group where the ideas are collected, categorized, and evaluated. Sometimes passed on to a neighbor to build on the idea or pass to the next person
