TermDefinition
Democracy a way of selecting policymakers and of organizing government so that policy made by government represents and responds to the public's preferences.
Elite And Class Theory idea that society is divided along economic lines and that a small group rules on the basis of its wealth and by pulling strings of government
Policy making institutions Three branches of government charged by the constitution with taking action on public issues faced by society
Gross Domestic product Total of value of all goods and services produced annually in a nation
Hyperpluralism Idea that too many strong influential groups attempting to influence the government cripple the governments ability to make coherent policy by dividing government and its authority
Linkage Institutions Political channels such as parties elections interest groups and the media through which citizensā€˜ concerns are transmitted to the government and become issues on the public agenda
Majority rule Democratic principle of choosing among policy alternatives by respecting the desire of more than one half of the voters
Minority rights Freedoms upon which the majority cannot infringe (speech, assemble) to ensure input by all citizens
Pluralist theory Idea that politics is a competition among many groups who make an organized effort to influence public policy made by the government
Policy Agenda List of subjects, Problems, or issues to which public officials are paying serious attention at any given time
Policy Gridlock Condition that occurs when groups use their influence to form a majority in order to block policies they oppose or when no coalition is strong enough to form a majority and establish policy
government institutions (such as Congress, the presidency, and the courts) And processes through which public policy is made for society
Policy making institutions Process by which the government response to peoples interest and concerns by taking action to make public policy that impacts society
Political issues Topic that arises when people disagree about a problem or the public policy choices made to combat a problem
Political Participation Activities, such as voting or protest, used by citizens to influence selection of leaders and policies
politics Process that determines whom we select as our government leaders and what policies they pursue
Public Goods Things that everyone must share such as clean air and clean water
Public policy Action taken by the government in response to an issue on its agenda (to address a problem)
Representation The relationship between the few leaders and the followers
Single-issued group Groups with a narrow focus who tend to be so concerned with one matter that their members cast their votes on the basis of that issue only and tend to dislike compromise
