Gas Exchange 4th Semester

TermDefinition
Syncope Temporary Loss of Consciousness (usually related to insufficient blood flow to the brain)
PIP (Peak Inspiratory Pressure) Highest pressure measured during respiratory cycle
PEEP (Positive End Expiratory Pressure) At the end of exhalation, PEEP maintains the airway pressure above atmospheric level
Cardiac tamponade Excessive fluid puts pressure on the heart, interrupting function
Pericardial effusion Fluid buildup in the pericardium
Aldosterone Hormone (adrenal gland) that keeps water and sodium (regulates blood pressure) and excretes potassium
Addison's Too little aldosterone
Cushing's Too much cortisol (body keeps too much sodium and wastes too much potassium)
Cortisol Adrenal gland steroid. Body's main stress hormone. Used for inflammation.
Conn's Syndrome Opposite to Addison's; too much aldosterone
Tidal Volume Volume of air delivered with each breath
Flail Chest Two or more contiguous broken ribs; the fractured segment will sink into the chest with inspiration
Oliguria Anuria Polyuria Abnormally small amounts of urine <400 ml/24hr Urine output <100 ml/24hr Increased urine output >3000 ml/24hr
Polydipsia Increased thirst
