Unit 1 Chap 1 MATTER

chemistry The study of how atoms, molecules and chemicals interact with each other
physical science The study of the nonliving things that make up the world
physics The study of matter, energy, motion and forces
atom The smallest unit into which an element can be divided and still maintain its properties
compound A pure substance consisting of atoms of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a fixed proportion
element A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means
matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
molecule A particle consisting of two or more atoms chemically tied together
pure substance A substance of constant composition that possesses definite qualities
chromatography A method of separating mixtures according to how the different components are absorbed
distillation A method of separating a liquid mixture by heating it so that liquid evaporates and condenses
filtration The use of paper or other materials to remove solid particles from a liquid mixture
heterogeneous mixture A combination of substances in which the particles are not uniformly distributed
homogeneous mixture A combination of substances in which the properties and appearance are the same throughout
mixture A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
colloid A mixture in which the particles of a substance are dispersed throughout and are not large enough to settle
suspension A mixture in which the particles of a substance are mixed throughout but are large enough to settle
