HGAP Unit 1 vocab

TermDefinition
Absolute Location The precise spot where something is according to some system
Clustered When objects or people are close together within a geographic boundary
Connectivity How well two locations are tied together by roads or other links
Cultural Ecology The study of how humans adapt to the environment
Cultural Landscape Cultural influence on the built landscape
Density the number of something in a specifically defined area. Can also describe distribution or be expressed in psychological terms
Dispersal The spacing of objects or people within a geographic boundary
Distance Decay The less distance there is between placed, the better connected the tend to be
Environmental Determinism The belief that landforms are the most powerful forces shaping human behavior and societal development
Equator An imaginary line that circles the globe exactly halfway between the North and South Poles. The equator is designated as 0 ° latitude and the poles as 90 ° north and south respectively
Field Observation The act of physically visiting a location, place, or region and recording, firsthand, information there
Ghost Town Abandoned settlements
Globalization The homogenizing impact on local culture and economics caused by increased interaction between geographically distinct regions
Human-Environment Interaction The connections and exchanges between humans and the natural world
Human Geography The study of the spatial characteristics of humans and human activities
Latitude The distance north or south of the equator
Longitude The distance east or west of the prime meridian
Physical Geography The study of spatial characteristics of various elements of the physical environment
Place This refers to the specific human and physical characteristics of a location
Possibilism A view that acknowledges limits on effects of the natural environment and focuses more on the role that human culture plays
Prime Meridian An imaginary line that runs from pole to pole through Greenwich, England. It is designated as 0 ° longitude. Exactly opposite it on the other side of the world is designated 180 ° longitude
Proximity Degree of nearness
Relative Direction The direction of a place in relation to a current location or orientation
Relative Location The description of where something is in relation to other things
Sense of Place Human perception of a place based on personal beliefs and deep connection
Site Characteristics of a places immediate location
Situation The location of a place relative to its surroundings and other places
Spatial Association When two patterns of distribution match or are similar which indicates that they two phenomena might be related
Spatial Data Information that can be tied to a specific location
Spatial Pattern/Distribution General arrangements of things being studied
Sustainability Use of the earth's resources in a way that they will be available in the feature
Time-Space Convergence/Compression The shrinking "time distance" between locations because of improved methods of transportation and communication
Toponym A place name
Accessibility How quickly and easily people in one location can interact with people in another location
Friction of distance When things are farther apart they tend to be less well connected
Built Environment Physical artifacts that humans have created and that form part of the landscape
Geospatial Data Information that can be tied to a specific place
Space The physical gap or interval between two objects
