Informational Provides information on a specific topic Nonfiction No characters or settings
Biography Story of someone’s life written by someone else.
AutoBiography Story of someone’s life written by him/herself.
Traditional Literature Stories passed down for generations Original stories were usually passed down orally Myths, legends, folk tales, fairy tales, and fables. Unknown origin
Fantasy Contains characters or situations that can’t happen in real life. Characters may have magical powers in addition to human qualities. The theme is often focused on good versus evil.
Science Fiction Fantasy that involves science. Often set in the future. Uses technology in the story.
Adventure A story with an exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger. These stories typically have a hero as the main character.
Realistic Fiction Characters are everyday people doing everyday things. Setting is a modern-day realistic place. Story consists of realistic events.
Historical Fiction Takes place in the past (forty years or before). Story contains historical events. Characters may be historical figures.
Mystery Involves something unknown. Centered around a person investigating a crime or finding secret information.
Graphic Novel A narrative work in which the story is conveyed to the reader using sequential art, either in an experimental design or in a traditional comics format.
Poetry Shortened form of writing. Contains figurative language- May follow a form/structure but does not have to.
