matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
physical property | a characteristics of a substance that does not involve a chemical change,such as density, color , or hardness |
chemical property | a property of matter of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in chemical reactions |
extensive property | a property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
intensive property | a property that does not depend on the amount of matter present , such as pressure , temperature |
ducility | the ability of a substance to be hammed thin or drawn out into a wire |
malleabillity | the ability of a substance to be hammed or beaten into a sheet |
volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three dimensional space |
compressibility | the measure of how much a given volume decreases when placed under pressure |
density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance |
evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directy in to gas |
vaporization | the process by which a liquid or solid changes to gas |
element | a substances that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances |
compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
heterogeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar compounds |
homgeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout mixtures |
atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
physical changes | a change of matter form one of form to another without a change in chemical properties |
chemical change | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
