Unit 1: Matter
Term | Definition |
---|---|
matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
physical property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness |
chemical property | relates to a substance's ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances |
extensive property | property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
intensive property | property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, or density |
ductility | ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
malleability | ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
volume | A measure of the size of a body or region in the three-dimensional space |
compressibility | the measure of how much a given volumes of matter decreases when places under pressure |
density | Ratio of mass of a substance; often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter for solids and liquids and as grams per liter for gases |
evaporation | the change of a substance from liquid to a gas |
sublimation | process in which a solid changes directly into a gas; also used for the reverse process |
vaporization | the process by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas |
element | Substances that can't be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means; all atoms of an element have the same atomic number |
compound | s substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
heterogeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar components |
homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout |
atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties of that element |
