Unit 1: Matter
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
Physical property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness |
Chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substanceĀ“s ability to participate in chemical reactions |
Physical changes | a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
Chemical changes | a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
Extensive property | a property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
Intensive property | a property that does not depend on the amount of matter present, such as pressure, temperature, or density. |
Ductility | the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
Malleability | the ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
Volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space |
Compressibility | the measure of how much given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure |
Density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance; often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter for solids and liquids and as grams per liter for gases |
Evaporation | the change of a substance from liquid to a gas |
Sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas (the term is sometimes also used for the reverse process) |
Vaporization | the process by which a liquid or solid changes to a gas |
Element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means; all atoms of an element have the same atomic number. |
Compound | a substance made of atoms or two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
Hetergeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar components |
Homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout |
Atom | the smallest unit of an element the maintains the chemical proper-ties of that element |
