unit 1: matter
Term | Definition |
---|---|
matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
physical property | a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change such as density color or hardness |
chemical property | a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions |
physical changes | a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
extensive property | a property that depends on the extent or size of a system |
intensive property | a property that does not depend of the amount of matter |
ductility | the ability of a substance to be hammered thin or drawn out into a wire |
malleability | the ability of a substance to be hammered or beaten into a sheet |
volume | a measure of the size of a body or region in three dimensional space |
compressibility | the measure of how much a given volume of matter decreases when placed under pressure |
density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance |
evaporation | the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas |
sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
vaporization | the process by which a liquid or solid changes into a gas |
element | a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances |
compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
heterogeneous mixture | composed of dissimilar components |
homogeneous mixture | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout. |
atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical properties |
physical change | a change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance (change in state of matter, ex. solid to a liquid to a gas.) |
chemical change | a change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances (chemical reaction takes place) |
