Body Planes, Anatomical Terms, Anatomical Position

QuestionAnswer
Anatomical Position Body erect, feet slightly apart, palms facing forward with thumbs away from the body
Plane Imaginary flat surface passing through the body
Section A cut made along a body plane to observe internal anatomy, named after what plane it was cut on
Sagittal Plane Divides the body vertically into left and right parts
Midsagittal Plane The sagittal plane was made perfectly on the body's midline
Parasagittal Plane The sagittal plane was not on the body's midline
Frontal (coronal) Plane Divides the body vertically into posterior and anterior parts
Transverse Plane Divides the body perpendicularly to the vertical plane, making a horizontal division into superior and inferior parts
Oblique Section A transverse cut that is not perpendicular to the vertical plane
Superior Directional term--above
Inferior Directional term--below
Anterior Directional term--to the front
Posterior Directional term--to the back
Proximal Directional term--closer to point of origin
Distal Directional term--farther from point of origin
Medial Directional term--closer to the midline
Lateral Directional term--farther from the midline
Intermediate Directional term--between medial and lateral
Superficial (external) Directional term--closer to the surface of the body
Deep (internal) Directional term--farther from the surface of the body
Ventral Directional term--in animals, this is closer to the stomach
Dorsal Directional term--in animals, this is closer to the back
Ipsilateral On the same side of the body
Contralateral On different sides of the body
Cephalic Refers to the head end of the body
Caudal Near the tail end of the body
Rostral In front of
