Med Administration

TermDefinition
Air embolism The presence of air bubbles in the bloodstream
Catheter fragment embolism The shearing or detachment of an IV catheter, allowing the embolus to travel in the bloodstream
Cellulitis An infectious condition of the skin resulting in inflammation that is characterized most commonly by local heat, redness, pain, and swelling, and occasionally by fever, malaise, chills, and headache.
Embolus A blockage or free-moving thrombus in a blood vessel
Extravasation The passage or escape of blood, serum, or lymph into the tissues
Hematoma formation The infiltration of blood into the tissues at the site of venipuncture
Household system A common system of measurement that includes the glass, cup, tablespoon, teaspoon, drop, quart, and pint
Infiltration The process by which a fluid passes into tissues
Medical asepsis The removal or destruction of disease-causing organisms or infected material
Metric system A system of measurement that includes the meter, liter, and gram
Necrosis The death of tissue
Phlebitis Inflammation of a vein, often accompanied by the formation of a clot; also known as thrombophlebitis
Pulmonary embolism The blockage of a pulmonary artery by foreign matter, such as fat, air, tumor tissue, or a thrombus that usually arises from a peripheral vein
Sepsis Infection
Sloughing The separating of tissue
Thromboembolism A condition in which a blood vessel is blocked by an embolus carried in the bloodstream from the site of formation of the clot
Thrombosis The formation of a blood clot in a blood vessel
Transdermal drug administration Administration of drugs that are absorbed through the skin.
