Elements & Principles of Design

TermDefinition
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN (Elements of Design is a basic visual component an artist uses to create art.)
LINE a continuous mark made on some surface by a moving point.
SHAPES a closed line that creates height and width that may be organic or geometric.
FORM a object that has depth.
COLOR a hue, pigment, stimuli in how we see light reflected from a surface.
SPACE positive or negative, the empty or open area between,around, above, below or within objects.
TEXTURE the way a surface feels or looks.
VALUE the darkness or lightness on a surface which may be color or a neutral.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN (Principles are guidelines that govern the way artists organize the elements of art.)
BALANCE the arranging art elements in an artwork so no one part of that work overpowers, or seems heavier than, any other part. Formal Balance = symmetrical balance / Informal Balance = asymmetrical balance/ Radial Balance
MOVEMENT & RHYTHM used to create the look and feel of action and to guide the viewer’s eye, and rhythm is the repetition of an element to make a work seem active.
PROPORTION the parts of a work relate to each other and to the whole.
EMPHASIS to make a object or element stand out.
VARIETY combining art elements by adding slight changes to increase visual interest.
UNITY the arrangement of elements and principles with media to create a feeling of completeness.
PATTERN a decorative effect achieved through the repetition of colors, lines, shapes, and or textures.
