What is the treaty of tordesillas? After Columbus’ first voyage the pope got Spain and Portugal to agree to the treaty.
Why did the pope want this signed? He wanted this signed because he wanted to prevent war between the two countries.
Who would the new land go to if it was discovered on the west of the line? It was Spanish land.
What if land was discovered on the east side of the line? It was Portuguese.
What was “the line”? The treaty drew a line across the globe from the north to south the line of tordesillas.
Who owned Brazil? Portugal
Who owned the rest of South America? Spain
What was the impacts of colonisation? The native population was declined, the destruction of cultures, the spread of Christianity and a massive growth in the slave trade.
What was the slavery triangle? The slavery triangle was when ships sailed to African slaving ports and took slaves to the Americas, then ships would be toiled on sugar, tobacco and cotton and would the sail back to Europe full of food an precious materials.
Who was Hernán Cortés? Cortés was a Spanish conquistador that led an expedition that resulted in the destruction of the Aztecs.
Why did Cortés attack the aztecs? Cortés attacked the aztecs because the Cuban governor sent a force to confront Cortés.
What did Cortés do to the ships to stop people going back to Cuba? He burned all of them.
What was tenochitlan? Tenochitlan was the capital for the Aztec empire.
How did tenochitlan fall? Tenochitlan fell because the leader was killed.
Who was Bartolomeu Dias? Bartolomeu Dias rounded the southern tip of Africa and called it the cape of good hope.
Who was Christopher Columbus? He was a Spanish explorer who discovered the Americas while on the search for the spice islands and China.
What was a caravel? A large ship, sturdy enough to make long journeys and sail in all winds.
What was a log and line? Measured a ships speed in knots by letting a rope with knots tied in at regular intervals.
