sound A mechanical disturbance produced by an object's vibrations
transverse wave A wave in which the medium's particles move in a direction that is perpendicular to the direction of the wave's movement
longitudinal wave A wave in which the movement of the medium's particles is parallel to the direction of the wave's movement
compression A section in a longitudinal wave where the particles are tightly packed together
rarefaction A section in a longitudinal wave where the particles are loosely packed together
amplitude The maximum distance a wave vibrates from its resting position
medium Any substance through which a wave can travel
wave A disturbance that transfers energy through matter or space
frequency The number of complete waves that pass a particular point in a unit of time (such as in a second)
Doppler effect The change in the frequency and pitch of a sound caused by the motion of the sound source or the listener
intensity The average rate of energy that flows through a defined area
pitch How high or low a sound is, and it's related to frequency
ultrasonic sound Sounds with frequencies higher than 20,000 Hz (such as a bat can produce)
acoustics The scientific study of sound
music A sound with a pleasing quality, an identifiable pitch, and a repeated timing called rhythm
noise pollution A level of noise that causes irritation, pain, or damage to a part of the body
resonance What occurs when an object vibrating at or near the frequency of a second object causes the second object to vibrate
sonar Sound Navigation and Ranging - a method of using ultrasonic waves to calculate underwater distances or locate underwater objects
