What can you infer from the fact that the Portuguese sometimes used force in order to set up trading posts? The Portuguese were not always interested in conducting fair trade or allowing for competition. The native populations may have resented the power of the Portuguese outsiders
What was the Dutch East India Company? A Dutch monopoly for asian trade
How was the Dutch expansion into Asia similar to and different from the Portuguese expansion into Asia? The Dutch sought to control come of the same markets that the Portuguese did. The Dutch set up more trading posts than the Portuguese did. They took over lands and conquered people
Which countries were England’s main rivals for control of India? Netherlands and france
Why were the English eventually able to gain total control over India? The Mughal power that had controlled India began to decline and the English took advantage of the power struggle to gain control. The English forces proved stronger than the Dutch and French rivals.
Missionary A person who is sent to do religious or charitable work in a foreign country
Persecution The causing of injury or distress to others because of their religion, race or political beliefs
What were Chinese attitudes towards trade in the 1500s? The Chinese did not feel a need for European manufactured products and would accept only bold or silver as payment for Chinese goods
Compare and contrast Portugal’s experience in China with its experience in Southeast Asia and India The Portuguese did establish a trading post in China however they were not successful in their Chinese trade
How did the Chinese regard the Europeans who arrives to trade with them? The Chinese regarded the Europeans as foreign devils or pirates with whom they did not need to do business
What can you infer about China based on its leaders beliefs that it was superior to European countries? The Chinese had an advanced and prosperous society. The Chinese has a false sense of pride about their accomplishments.
Which countries succeeded in trading with Japan? Portugal and the Netherlands traded with Japan
What was the effect of Portuguese efforts to spread Christianity in Japan? The missionary efforts upset Japanese officials and they persecuted the missionaries and Christians.
