Civics: Amendments to the Constitution

1st Amendment | You have the freedoms of religion, speech, press; and the right to assemble peacefully and petition the government. |
2nd Amendment | Citizens can keep and bear arms. |
3rd Amendment | You don't have to house soldiers (quartering) in your home during peacetime. |
4th Amendment | No unreasonable searches or seizures. |
5th Amendment | The government cannot deprive you of your natural rights (life, liberty, or property) or your right to not incriminate yourself, without due process of law. |
6th Amendment | The right to have a jury hear your case in a criminal trial. |
7th Amendment | The right to have a jury hear your case in most civil trials. |
8th Amendment | Bail, fines, and punishments must not be excessive. |
9th Amendment | Did you find a right not listed in the Constitution? It belongs to the people. |
10th Amendment | If a power isn't given to the federal government, it goes to the states or the people. |
13th Amendment | Abolished Slavery |
14th Amendment | (a) Defines who is a Citizen of the United States. (b) No state can limit a citizen’s rights nor take away their natural rights without due process of law; nor deny a person equal protection of the laws. |
15th Amendment | Guaranteed that the right to vote could not be denied based on “race, color, or previous condition of servitude. |
19th Amendment | Granted women the right to vote. |
26th Amendment | Gave 18 year old US Citizens the right to vote |
Anti-Federalists | Fears a strong government and demanded that the Constitution include all citizen's rights. |
Federalists | Feared the Government could violate rights that are not listed in the Constitution. |
