VET 113- Anatomy + F

Pregnancy, Development, Lactation- chp 20

TermDefinition
Zygote the ovum once it is fertilized
Implantation when blastocysts embeds itself in the endometrium, the placenta begins to form after this step.
Placenta the life support system for the developing offspring, develops around the embryo
Umbilical Cord connects the placenta to the embryo
Gestation time from fertilization of the ovum to delivery of the newborn
1st Trimester the embryonic period, this is when the placenta develops
2nd Trimester the fetal development period, this is when body tissues/organs/systems develop
3rd Trimester the fetal growth period
Parturition the birth process. Can be triggered by size, weight of the uterus and fetus, changing hormone levels.
Fetal Changes after birth some changes include: lungs expanding and functioning, and the foramen ovale and ductus arteriosus close.
1st Stage of Labor uterine contractions occur, the myometrium contacts, fetus is pressed down against cervix, and the cervix gradually dilates
2nd Stage of Labor the actual delivery of the newborn. The amniotic/allantoic sacs of the placenta rupture, uterine and abdominal muscles contract in a rhythmic pattern, the newborn is delivered.
3rd Stage of Labor
Involution of the Uterus
Cow Udder
Alveoli
Alveolar Duct
Lactation
Hormones involved in starting lactation
Colostrum
Lactation Maintenance
Milk Letdown
Diffuse Placental Attachment when the attachment sites are spread diffusely over the whole surface of the placenta and the whole lining of the uterus (pigs, horses, camelids).
Cotyledonary Placental Attachment the most complicated type of attachment, areas of attachment small discreet and numerous (cattle, sheep, goats).
Zonary Placental Attachment when the placenta attaches to the uterus in a belt-shaped zone that encircles the placenta (dogs and cats).
Discoid Placental Attachment when the area of attachment between the placenta and uterus is a single, discrete disc-shaped area (humans, primates, rabbits, rodents).
