Thermochem Vocab
Thermochemistry Vocabulary Practice w/ Dr. Corey
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Thermochemistry | the study of heat changes that occur during chemical reactions and phase changes (physical changes of state) |
Exothermic PROCESS | gives off heat and energy is lost from the system; feels hot |
Endothermic PROCESS | absorbs heat and energy is added to the system; feels cold |
Endothermic REACTION | energy taken in and absorbed to do work |
Exothermic REACTION | energy given off and produces heat |
calorie | commonly used unit for heat energy |
Calorie | energy contained in the food we eat, measured in kilocalories |
Joule (J) | SI unit for heat energy, will primarily be used for our calculations |
calorie to Calorie conversion factor | 1000 calories = 1 Calorie =1 kilocalorie |
Enthalpy (H) | amount of heat transferred |
units for specific heat | j/(g°C) or cal/(g°C) |
Law of Conservation of Energy | energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted into different forms |
calorimeter | device used to measure the absorption or release of heat in chemical and physical processes |
melting | solid to liquid, endothermic |
two forms of energy | potential & kinetic |
freezing | liquid to a solid, exothermic |
energy | ability to do work or produce heat |
type of exothermic reaction | fireworks |
type of endothermic reaction | melting |
potential energy | stored energy |
kinetic energy | energy of motion |
Hess's Law | if you can add two or more thermochemical equations to produce a final equation for a reaction, the sum of the enthalpy changes |
water molecules | form strong bonds and heat needed to break them |
metals | weak bonds and no energy needed to break |
specific heat | amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of a substance |
absolute zero | temperature in which all molucular motion stops |
Kelvin (K) | SI unit for temperature |
two ways temperature can be measured | Kelvin or Celsius |
heat (q) | energy that is in the process of flowing from a warmer object to a colder one |
