Definitions, Terms

Pleura Membrane surrounding the lungs.
Mediastinum Space between the lungs, containing the heart.
Pelvis Bones of the hip.
Abdominal Cavity Space containing the liver, gallbladder and stomach, also called the abdomen.
Spinal Cavity Space within the backbones, containing the spinal cord.
Peritoneum Membrane surrounding the organs in the abdomen.
Cranial Cavity Space within the skull containing the brain.
Pelvic Cavity Space below the abdominal cavity, containing the urinary bladder.
Diaphragm Muscle between the thoracic and abdominal cavity.
Thoracic Cavity Entire chest cavity, containing the lungs heart trachea esophagus and bronchial tubes.
Cervical (neck) 7 bones, C1 - C7
Thoracic (chest) 12 bones, T1 - T12
Lumbar (loin, waist) 5 bones, L1 - L5
Sacral (lower back) 5 fused bones, S1 - S5
Coccygeal (tailbone) 4 fused bones
Frontal (coronal) Plane Vertical plane that divides the body into front and back portions.
Sagittal (lateral) Plane Vertical plane that divides the body into right and left portions.
Transverse (axial) Plane Horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower portions.
