Central nervous system | the processing centre of the body and consists of the brain and the spinal cord. |
Peripheral nervous system | one of two components that make up the nervous system of bilateral animals, |
Mixed nerve | carries both sensory and motor fibers |
Hyperpolarization | a change in a cell's membrane potential that makes it more negative. |
Repolarization | the change in membrane potential that returns it to a negative value just after the depolarization phase of an action potential which has changed the membrane potential to a positive value. |
Depolarization | a change within a cell, during which the cell undergoes a shift in electric charge distribution, resulting in less negative charge inside the cell compared to the outside. |
Action potential | occurs when the membrane potential of a specific cell location rapidly rises and falls: |
Endocrine system | a messenger system comprising feedback loops of the hormones released by internal glands of an organism directly into the circulatory system, regulating distant target organs. |
Lymphatic system | an organ system in vertebrates that is part of the immune system, and complementary to the circulatory system. |
Phagocytosis | the ingestion of bacteria or other material by phagocytes and amoeboid protozoans. |
