What is the Grand Canal? A waterway linking the Huang and Chiang Rivers
Why was the Grand Canal important? It helped join northern and southern China and supply the capital with grain.
Describe one important change in government made by the Song. They used the merit system to hire government officials
How did this change affect China? The government was improved because qualified people were given jobs, not just the friends of the bosses
How did the Mongols conquer China? By forceful conquest

What are the geographical features of Japan? Japan is an archipelago with mountainous volcanic islands
When did Japan start to develop its own traditions? The 800s
What led to Japan’s isolation? The fact that it is an island nation, the policy of Tokugawa Ieyasu
What happened to the emperor and the nobles during the 1000s? The emperor lost power, the nobles gained power
What led to the establishment of shoguns? The emperor gave the title of shogun to Minamoto Yoritomo who set up the Kamakura shogunate
How did trade develop between Japan and Europe in the 1500s? Portuguese ships landed on Japan’s coast in 1543 and the Japanese who were interested in their products began to develop trade relations with the Europeans
How and why did the Tokugawas isolate Japan? The Tokugawas worried that Europeans might try to conquer Japan, so they outlawed Christianity, forced Europeans to leave, closed Japans’s ports and stopped building large ships that could travel long distances.

How might India’s history have been different if there had been no mountain passes in the north? Conquerors and invaders might not have reached India
What was the Delhi Sultanate? the period of history from 1206 to 1526 when Muslim rulers or sultans controlled northern India and parts of present day Bangladesh and Pakistan
How did Hindus and Muslims live together in India during this time? Muslims didn't become part of Hindu society and the two cultures had many conflicts
Why was Akbar called “the Great”? he was just a ruler who ruled the Mughal Empire successfully for 49 years. He encouraged the arts and for Hindus and Muslims to live together peacefully. Most of northern India was under his control
What caused the decline of the Mughal Empire? rulers after Akbar spent money on extravagant buildings and expensive wars and reversed Akbar's policies towards Hindus which caused Hindus to rebel and cost the empire even more money
