6 Anion Tests

Chemical Equations Tests for anions

QuestionAnswer
What indicates the presence of a Chloride Ion after a few drops of Silver Nitrate (AgNO3) have been added? A white percipitate is formed which is insoluble in ammonia solution
How do you distinguish between a Sulphate & a Sulphite? Add Barium Chloride (BaCl2) solution and then HCl if the white ppt remains = Sulphate, if ppt dissolves = Sulphite.
How to test for a carbonate? Add dilute HCl, if fizzing occurs and the gas given off turns limewater milky it's a carbonate.
How to distinguish between a carbonte & a hydrogen carbonate? Add Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4), if white ppt forms = carbonate, if no ppt = Hydrogen Carbonate, Boiling will then give ppt.
How do you know if a nitrate is present ? You get a brown ring at the junction of the two liquids, on addition of freshly prepared Iron Sulphate (FeSO4) and conc Sulphuric acid.
What is a brown ring test? When you add a freshly prepared Iron sulphate solution and conc sulphuric acid to a solution of a solid, to test for Nitrates.
What do you use to test for Phosphates? Ammonium Molybdate is added and then conc Nitric acid & the solution warmed gently. Yellow ppt confirms Phosphate
What confirms the presence of a phosphate? A yellow ppt.
What confirms a nitrate? A brown ring on the junction of the two liquids.
The law of conservation of mass states In a chemical reaction the total of the mass of products is equal to the total of the mass of reactants.
The law of conservation of matter states In a chemical reaction that matter is neither created or destroyed it just changes from one form to another
