DKA

DKA | partial or lack of insulin-Type I DM starts with infection |
Onset | Sudden, ususally from infection |
Manifestations | Ketosis:Kussmaul resp, fruity breath, nausea, abd pain, Dehydration, 3 P's, |
Classic Symptoms | 3P's, weight loss, N/V, dehydration, altered mental status, shock,and coma. |
Management/Interventions-Step 1 | Fist access airway, LOC, hydration status, electrolytes, and blood glucose level |
Management/Intervention-Step 2 | Replace fluids with NS then NS+dectrose |
Management/Intervention-Step 3 | Admisister Insulin + replace fluids |
Acidosis Management | Administer K-assess for signs of hypokalemia |
Before Giving IV K | make sure pt produces at least 30 mL of urine |
Step 4 | After DKA is managed access for cause of infection |
