What is one reason that Leon gives as to why some people might not consider Oskar Schindler a "great" man? He calls him a womanizer, scoundrel, war profiteer and a drunk
What is the most valuable thing about Leon’s father’s job - more so than money or food? Leon's father gets a work permanent and that means they won't be moved away
How does Leon’s “daredevil” attitude get him into some trouble in this chapter? Leon starts to hangout with the Germans, but when they (Germans) find out that he is a Jew he gets beat up.
When the first groups of Jews are sent out of the city, where are they told they are going? In all likelihood, where are they actually going? They get told that they are going to the countryside. They were actually going to the concentration camps.
How many non-Jewish people moved out of the part of town where the ghettos were being constructed? How many Jewish people moved in? What does that tell you about the living conditions there? 5,000 non-Jews moved out of the ghettos and 15,000 Jews moved in the ghetto. It shows that it is crowded and there is no privacy, people probably starve some nights.
What is the new phrase that Leon and his family use to cope with the terrible things happening to them? How can this phrase help with the ghetto situation? They use the phrase “if worse could Happen”. It can help them get through because when they are saying this phrase there saying well if this is bad all it could do is get worse.
Briefly describe the living conditions in the ghettos. Crowed, small, combusted, no privacy, and herms were spread.
Give an example of how desperate the food situation is for the Jews in the ghetto. The food situation in the ghetto is so desperate that some people starve and others trade their personal stuff for money to get food.
What does Leon do when he receives bread? What does this tell us about him? He eats some then gives some to his family. This shows that the littlest things can make someone happy.
What is the reality of the deportations vs what ghetto residents are told? Deportations Jews go to concentration camps and get killed, and treated badly What the ghetto residents are told They are told they are going somewhere different.
What happens to Tsalig? Tsalig didn’t have a work percent and had to be taken away
What did Leon do that resulted in his being shot at? What does this tell you about the level of Nazi cruelty? He was shot at because he was out late. They don’t care about whether your a child or an adult
Leon’s mother sobs uncontrollably when he returns safely. As a reminder, what has happened to the two sons she’s already lost? Herschel is in his old town and Tasalig was deported.
Why are some of Leon’s family members safe from the next deportation? What insight does this give us into the character of Oskar Schindler? Leon's family was safe from deportation because Schindler hid his dad and David. It tells you that he doesn't care that they're Jews and he wants to help people
What is Leon’s mother’s plan to avoid being deported? She cleans the road so people can think she has a job so she won’t get deported
Be prepared to discuss the horror of hiding during the roundup.
How did Leon and his mother know that it was safe to come out of hiding? Leon's mom knew it was safe to come out of hiding because the guy telling her to come out knew both she and her husband's name.
What does Leon’s mother do to her furniture once she is made to move? Why? What can we learn about her based on this action? Leons’s mother throws her furniture out the window so the Nazi’s won’t have there furniture. She is kind of a rebel.
