Kate Chopin was one of the first female writers. She wrote about strong, independence women
Edgar Degas was a French artist associated with Impressionism.
Katherine Drexel was a Catholic nun who worked to establish schools for black students.
Murphy J. Foster was a former governor of the state was against the Louisiana Lottery Company and he forbade the sale of lottery tickets. His grandson became governor in 1996-2004.
Henry Hardtner and his brother had an interest in timber. He was one the important people in America's Forestry Industry. He saw trees as a renewable resource and he replanted after trees were harvested.
T.H. Harris is known as "The Father of Louisiana's Modern Education System". He required teachers to have college degrees.
David Hennessey was the Chief of Police in NOLA who was murdered by the Mafia. HIs death continues to be one of NOLA's bug mysteries.
Seaman A. Knapp moved to the south to try and modernize agricultural techniques. He convinced Northern farmers to move to the region.
Ferdinand Morton "Jelly Roll" was a Louisiana born jazz composer and piano player. He had a diamond set in his front tooth and blamed his failing health on a voodoo curse.
Francis T. Nicholls was a Louisiana governor who was against the Louisiana Lottery Company and he passed a law that you couldn't mail lottery tickets. Since most of the money was coming in the mail from other states, the lottery faded out.
Homer Adolph Plessy challenged the Jim Crow Laws by purchasing a ticket for the 'white care" on a train when he was 1/8 black. This case went all the way to Supreme Court.
Theodore Roosevelt was a former President who came to Louisiana to hunt bears.He hunted with Ben Lilly from Morehouse Parish.When he hadn't killed a bear,his guide tied a baby bear to the tree but Roosevelt didn't shoot it.They called the bear aTeddy Bear.He later killed it
Edward Douglass White was a Civil War hero who held the position of justice of the Supreme Court. The only Louisianian to do this.
