What are the nursing considerations of Sulfonamides? increase Dilantin levels; used to treat seizures; normal 10-20
What is the patient education for Sulfonamides? avoid prolonged exposure to sun, wear sunscreen even on cloudy days; topical application, use a thin layer

What is the patient education for Tetracyclines? Do not give to anyone under the age of 8 due to teeth discoloration
What are examples of Macrolides? Erythromycin, Zithromax, Biaxin, Fidaxomicin (treat C-diff)
What are the adverse reactions of Macrolides? GI bleed-emesis (look like ground coffee) rectal bleed ( bright red means active bleed) dark blood means old blood; Tinnitus ringing in the ear
Associated labs of Macrolides are: seizure medications (Potentiates Tegretol, Digoxin, Coumadin, Theophylline (increase sedative effect in Bronchodilator)
What are the nursing considerations of Macrolides? use cautiously in clients taking sulfonamides and theophylline
Is Lincosamides safe to give while pregnant? yes
What are examples of Lincosamides? Lincocin, Clindamycin (Cleocin)
What are the adverse reactions of Lincosamides? blood dyscrasias (abnormal material in the blood)
What are the nursing considerations for Lincosamides? avoid alcohol based products and areas with open flames; wait 30 minutes after bathing and shaving to apply topically
Examples of Glyc are : Bleomycin-most common; IV only; Redman's Syndrome (peaking trough 15-20, over 20 hold the dose)
What does Antifungals do? kill or inhibit fungus from growing
Patient's with renal disease should avoid Antifungals
What are the adverse reactions of Glycopeptide? Malaise-tired; Dyspepsia-indigestion; Hepatoxicity-Liver; Nephrotoxicity-kidney
Nursing considerations for Glycopeptide are: protect Amphotericin B from sunlight- cover package and tubing

What are Anthelmintics used for? used to treat worms
What are the adverse reactions of Anthelmintics? abnormal bloating, anorexia-worms eat up food people eat (body wasting away); Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
What are the associated labs with Anthelmintic medications? sampling of stool, blood, urine, sputum, or tissue from infected host for ova/larva
What are the nursing considerations for Anthelmintic medications: strict handwashing
Associated labs with Antimalarials/Antiprotozoals are: test African Americans and those of Mediterranean descent for G6PD prior to starting therapy- genetic disorder that effects glucose; can't be cured; breakdown red blood cells; responds to certain medications
Nursing considerations with Antimalarials/Antiprotozoals are: they may lower seizure threshold depending on dose and length of time client has been taking medications
What is the patient education for Antimalarials/Antiprotozoals? if medication is only taken weekly, take on the same day of each week at the same time
