composition | a product of mixing or combining various elements or ingredients (i.e. chocolate chip cookie composition is sugar, milk , butter, flour, eggs, salt, and chocolate chips) |
density | the amount of atoms that make up an object or substance. |
halocline (HA-luh-kliyn) | a zone in which there is a rapid vertical change in salinity |
salinity (suh-LIH-nuh-tee) | the degree of saltiness of a salt solution, especially applied to ocean water |
thermocline (THUHR-muh-kliyn) | a zone of rapid temperature change between the warm surface waters and the cooler deep waters |
dissolve | to become incorporated with a liquid in forming a solution |
solution | a liquid mixture in which the smaller component (solute) is distributed (dissolved) evenly through the major component (solvent) |
solute | the substance that is being dissolved |
solvent | the substance that is doing the dissolving |
evaporation | when water molecules (H20) absorb energy, the water temperature increases. Warmer water molecules move farther apart, eventually turning into a water vapor that rises into the air |
