3.2 National 4 Bio
3.2 The impact of population growth and natural hazards on biodiversity.
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is biodiversity? | The range/number of different species present in an ecosystem |
What is deforestation? | Deforestation is a human activity that leads to the removal of forest area. |
What is over-fishing? | Over-fishing occurs when large numbers of a particular species of fish are caught and removed from the water than can be replaced through natural reproduction. |
What is intensive farming? | Intensive farming occurs when a large volume of produce (food) is generated from a relatively small area of land. It uses machines and fertilisers to maximise the volume of food produced. |
What is a natural hazard? | Natural hazards are extreme natural events that can cause loss of life, extreme damage to property and disrupt ecosystems. |
Examples of natural hazards | Hurricane / forest fires / earthquakes / tsunamis / floods / volcanic activity |
What is the impact of climate change on biodiversity? | Climate change is decreasing biodiversity |
What is the impact of deforestation on biodiversity? | Deforestation is a human activity that leads to the removal of forest area. This impacts biodiversity as trees and plants are removed. The habitat/food of many organisms is therefore impacted and biodiversity decreases. |
Examples of human activities that can impact biodiversity | Habitat destruction, Over-fishing, Intensive farming (agriculture), Genetic pollution, Climate change, Acid rain, Oil and Chemical spills, Sewage, Litter, Deforestation |
