Describe the geography and early settlement of Rome. Rome was founded in a fertile valley surrounded by seven hills near the Tiber River at the center of a long, narrow peninsula, the first settlements date to about 900 BC
Why did the Romans overthrow the Etruscans? the Romans were not allowed to participate in government and were ruled by an all-powerful king.
What were the important features of the Roman Republic? the government represented the will of the people, and citizens could vote to elect their leaders
Why did the Romans want the republic to have two consuls rather than one? they did not want one person to have too much power
Describe the features of the rule of Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar ruled as a dictator for life; he took over important offices such as consul and took away much of the senate's power; he also reorganized the government.
