S2 Forces

Frictional Forces

QuestionAnswer
How do you describe a force? a push or pull on an object
How is force measured? using a newton-meter In newtons (N)
What is Friction? A force that acts to stop movement
What causes friction? Occurs due to the "roughness" between two surfaces that are in contact
How does surface affect friction? Smoother surfaces produce have reduced friction Rough surfaces have high friction
When is small frictional force useful? when you want low friction; a slide, ice skating or trying to increase speed
When is a large frictional force useful? When you want high friction; soles of shoes, when writing and you want to decrease speed
How does mass affect friction? the heavier the object the greater the frictional force
How can friction be reduced? smoothing surfaces, using lubricants, rollers or ball bearings
How do lubricants work? A layer of liquid between the surfaces makes them slide over each other more easily
Name some common lubricants oil, grease, petroleum jelly
What are the negatives of friction? can produce unwanted heat and cause machine parts to become worn
What is drag? a frictional force which tries to stop an object moving through a fluid (e.g. water)
What is air resistance? a frictional force which acts to stop an object moving through air
How can drag be reduced? changing the shape of an object by making it more pointed and its outline smoother.
What is streamlining? Technique used to reduce drag
When is high air resistance needed? to slow down e.g. a parachute
when is low air resistance needed? to increase speed e.g. fighter jet

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
