What does Famine mean? Extreme scarcity of food, causing lots of deaths

What is a barter? A trade of things that people want
What is a city-state A Sumerian innovation that allowed people to work together to meet basic needs It governed surrounding lands and had its own ruler.
What is a ziggurat? A pyramid-shaped temple tower. Built to honor gods and goddesses.
What was cuneiform? Form of writing invented by Ancient Sumerians. Translates to “Wedge Shaped”. They used wooden styluses to write the characters on clay.
What was the Code of Hammurabi? A set of 282 laws created by King Hammurabi of Babylon. Created to maintain peace and justice.
Briefly explain the Mesopotamian Social Structure The division of society by rank or class (Job). Kings were at the top because they had the most power then came priests, warriors, government officials. After come specialized people, then farmers later, slaves.

What was a sign of Stable Food Supply in Mesopotamia? Mesopotamians created two inventions to help them have a stable food supply. They built canals, dams, and reservoirs to provide water for their crops
What was a sign of Writing is Mesopotamia? Sumerians created the first form of writing, Cuneiform.
What was a sign of Arts in Mesopotamia? They had metalworkers, they made weapons, cups, and decorative items. They also had musicians which were important since Sumerians believed music brought joy to the gods.
What was a sign of Government in Mesopotamia? Sumerian kings enforced the laws and collected taxes. They built temples and made sure irrigation systems were maintained. A king also led his city-state's army.
What was a sign of social structure in Mesopotamia? A social structure includes different jobs and social levels. People at higher levels have greater status than others. In this social structure, Kings came first, and slaves were at the bottom
What was a sign of Technology in Mesopotamia? They created the wheel which helped them create more stuff such as wheeled carts for the army.
What was a sign of Religion in Mesopotamia? The Sumerians tried to please their gods in all things, from growing crops to settling disputes. They created ziggurats which were basically churches to go worship their gods.
