Civic Responsibilities | Obeying laws, SERVING THE COMMUNITY, Improving the community, serving on a jury, voting |
Equality | An equal share for everyone, being FAIR, treating others equally, the rules and consequences go to everyone equally (JUDGES MUST BE FAIR) |
What is the Local Government in charge of? | Emergency POLICE, street lights, public transportation, streets, bridges, buses, subways, airport, public LIBRARY, municipal court, mayor's office, parks and recreation |
Judge | Each county has a county judge that is ELECTED by the people. It is the person who decides if community LAWS have been BROKEN. |
City Council | Makes city ordinances, Develops budgets, and makes LAWS |
Recreation | Communities create recreational opportunities to improve the quality of life for community members by providing PUBLIC POOLS, parks, walking trails, biking trails, and lakes. Private businesses also provide restaurants and movies. |
Community | Make decisions together, create businesses, and build and open things for the PUBLIC. |
Martin Luther King Jr. | A GOOD CITIZEN who was fair, truthful, and wanted EQUALITY(treating people the same way), and caring. |
Local Government | Mayor- Elected by the people |
State Government | Governor- Elected by the people |
National Government | President- Elected by the people |
Transportation | Movement from one place to another such as canals, highways, AIRPORTS, and cars. |
Consent of the Governed | Definition- The power comes from the people. Example- Citizens VOTE in elections |
Fair and Just | Birthday cupcakes for the entire class, drawing names for teams, involving everyone in a game. |
Vote | A process where groups of people can decide things fairly when they do not agree. In a democracy, people use VOTING to CHOOSE government LEADERS. It is an important part of a democracy. |
