Chemistry Unit 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Chemistry A science that deals with properties, composition, structure, and reactions of substances.
Noble Gas A group of gases that are stable and have extremely low reactions; group 18.
Atomic Number Number of protons in an atom.
Nuclear Fusion Joining together two nuclei to create a larger one.
Isotope Atoms with the same number of protons but a changed amount of neutrons.
Significant Figure The number of important digits in a value.
Density An object or substances volume in relation to its mass.
Metalloid A substance with qualities of a metal and a nonmetal.
Mass Number Protons + neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Electron Cloud A system of electrons that surrounds the nucleus of an atom.
Atom The smallest unit in which matter can be divided into; the basic building block in chemistry.
Precision Getting a similar answer multiple times.
Accuracy Getting an answer near the accepted answer.
Scientific Notation A system used to represent numbers that are either too large or too small to conveniently work with.
Percent Error A percentage that tells a person how far away their answer is to the accepted answer.
Quantitative Data Data that consists of a quantity or amount rather than words.
Qualitative Data Data that consists of words rather than quantity or an amount.
Specific Heat The required heat to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by one degree celsius.
Precipitate A substance that is seperated from a solution or suspension by some type of change.
Ion An atom that has either gained or lost electron(s).
