What are the Middle Ages? (Lesson 3) The era in European history that followed the fall of the Roman Empire.
When were the Middle Ages? (Lesson 3) 500 - 1500 AD / CE.
Who were the Franks? (Lesson 3) Germanic people who settled in the Roman province of Gaul (roughly the area now occupied by France) and established a great empire during the Middle Ages
What is a monastery? (Lesson 3) Religious communities; Centers of education, as well as a place for monks, priests, and nuns to live.
What is the Carolingian Dynasty? (Lesson 3) A dynasty of Frankish rulers, lasting from AD 751 to 987.
Who is Charlemagne? (Lesson 3) King of the Franks from 768 to 814; he united much of France, Germany, and northern Italy in one Frankish empire; crowned emperor of the Roman people in 800.
What were the roots/foundation of the Middle Ages/Early Europe? (Lesson 3) The belief in Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church which preserved classical culture and knowledge (reading and writing) of Greece and Rome and stood the test of time, as well as the various Germanic customs that were introduced.

Why were monasteries important? (Lesson 3) Centers of community life, helped Germanic people to convert to Christianity, would teach and preserve Greek and Roman knowledge, were the only ones in society literate; could read and write in Latin and Greek.
What is feudalism? (Lesson 4) A system of loyalties and protections based on mutual obligations.
What the Manor System? (Lesson 4) The basic economic system that grew out of and supported Feudalism.
Who were Vikings? (Lesson 4) Germanic people who raided and looted monasteries and villages, as well as explored beyond Western Europe. Stopped attacking monasteries as they accepted Christianity.
Who were Maygars? (Lesson 4) People who attacked Europe from the east, invaded western Europe, attacked villages and monasteries, did not settle conquered land, and took captives to sell as slaves.
Who were Muslims? (Lesson 4) People who attacked from the south, planned to conquer and settle in Europe, as well as attacked settlements on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.
What is the feudal pyramid? (Lesson 4) A social structure; king, powerful vassals, knights, landless peasants (serfs).
What is chivalry? (Lesson 5) A code of behavior for knights in medieval Europe, stressing ideals such as courage, loyalty, and devotion
What is a tournament? (Lesson 5) A mock battle between groups of knights to gain experience.
Who is a troubadour? (Lesson 5) A medieval poet and musician who traveled from place to place, entertaining people with songs of courtly love.
Who did knights fight for? (Lesson 5) Their lord, their God, and their lady.
What were women taught in the Middle Ages? (Lesson 5) Told they were inferior to men by the Church, had very little power.
What is a clergy? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) A group of officials who perform religious services; priests, ministers, or rabbis
What is a sacrament? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) A Christian ceremony where God's grace is transmitted to people.
What is canon law? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) The body of laws governing the religious practices of a Christian church.
What is lay investiture? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) The appointment of religious officials by kings and nobles.
What was the most dominant institution in the Middle Ages? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) The church.
What was the main goal of every Christian person in the Middle Ages? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) To reach heaven by doing whatever they were told, not questioning anything or their position in life, and to be a good Christian.
What is interdiction? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) When a king went against,questioned,or challenged church teachings.The church would deny the king and the people of his entire kingdom the following; from going to church, from receiving sacraments, a proper Church burial, and entrance into heaven.
What is excommunication? (Mod 11 Lesson 1) When the church denies the person from going to church, receiving sacraments, a proper church burial, and denied their soul from entering into heaven which was the main goal of every Medieval person, for challenging the teachings of the church.
