Forces and Motion
8.PS.2
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Balanced Forces | Forces acting on an object that combine and form a net force of zero |
Drag | Resistance by friction from air or water moving over a surface |
Force Diagram | A simple labeled diagram that shows the forces acting on an object as arrows that indicate the magnitude and direction of the force |
Force | A push or a pull |
Friction | The force that opposes the movement of two surfaces that are in contact and are moving over each other |
Gravity | A force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses |
Inertia | The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion |
Magnitude | Strength or size of force; in force diagrams this is represented by the length of the arrow |
Mass | A measure of the amount of matter in an object |
Motion | An object's change in position relative to a reference point |
Net Force | The sum of all forces acting on an object |
Nonzero Net Force | Causes a change in the object's motion (speed and/or direction) |
Position | An object's distance and direction from a reference point |
Reference Point | A place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion |
Speed | The distance an object travels per unit of time |
Stationary | Not moving; not changing |
Unbalanced Forces | Forces that produce a nonzero net force |
Weight | A measure of the force of gravity on an object |
