scale | the relationship between the portion of Earth being studied and the Earth as a whole |
space | refers to the physical gap or interval between two objects |
connection | refers to relationships among people and objects across the barrier of space |
cartography | the science of mapmaking |
remote sensing | the acquisition of data about the Earth's surface from a satellite orbiting the Earth or any other long-distance method |
mashup | a map that overlays data from one source on top of a map provided by a mapping service |
projection | the scientific method of transferring locations on Earth's surface to a flat map |
isoline map | connects with lines all the places that have particular values |
dot distribution map | depicts data as points and shows how those points are clustered together or spread out over an area |
choropleth map | a map where recognizable areas are shaded or patterned in proportion to the measurement of the variable |
graduated symbol map | displays symbols that change in size according to the value of the variable |
cartogram | a map in which the size of a country or U.S. state is proportional to the value of a particular variable; causes scale to be distorted |
toponym | a name given to a place on Earth |
location | the position that something occupies on Earth's surface |
site | the physical character of a place |
situation | aka relative location, location of a place relative to other places |
absolute location | describes the position of a place in a way that never changes |
formal/uniform region | can be called either, an area within which everyone shares in common one or more distinctive characteristics |
functional/nodal region | can be called either, an area organized around a node or focal point |
vernacular/perceptual region | an area that people believe exists as pat of their cultural identity |
