King Sargon of Sumer Ruled the people of Akkad (Northern Mesopotamia). In 2340 BC he conquered the remaining city-states. He formed the world's first empire.
King Hammurabi of Babylon Arounnd 1792 he conquered cities and created the Babylonian Empire. Known for the Hammurabi Code which gave punishments for each crime.
King Nebuchadnezzar of the Chaldeans In 627 BC he rebuilt Babylon, making it the largest and richest city in the world. He had to collect high taxes to support the building. He deafeated the Assyrians to win back his Chaldean Empire.
Mesopotamia The earliest known civilization. It was located between the Tigris and Euphraates Rivers. In Greek it means "land between the rivers"
Fertile Crescent Named for its rich soil, it is found in the Middle East. The earliest civilizations were started here. Also called the "cradle of civilization.
cuneiform A system of writing developed by the Sumerians that used wedge-shaped marks made in soft clay.
silt Fine particles of fertile soil. Flooded rivers were filled with this and when the floods ended it was left on the banks and plains.
irrigation A system that supplies dry land with water through ditches, pipes, or streams. The Mesopotamians dug canals that let water flow from th source to their fields.
scribe A person who copies or writes out documents; often a record keeper.
city-state A city that governs itself and its surrounding territory. They have their own political and economical control over the land that surrounds them.
Code of Law A set of official laws. The very strict code listed punishments for each crime.
Polytheism The worship of many gods.
Sumerians The people who believed and honored multiple gods that played different roles in their lives.
Ziggurat A pyramid shaped structure with a temple at the top.
Empire A large territory or group of many territories governed by one ruler.
Early farmers used water from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers to water their fields. Spring flooding left silt that was good for farming. Later on they developed canals and irrigation systems to help this further. Why did the Sumerians farm in the region?
