Earth, Moon and Sun Vocabulary

TermDefinition
axis the real or imaginary line on which an object rotates.
first quarter moon First quarter is one of the moon's phases. One half of the moon is illuminated as the moon is waxing.
full moon The entire moon is visible to Earth in the night sky.
high tide the highest level to which the tide rises.
low tide the lowest level to which the tide flows.
new moon the first phase when it is between the Earth and sun.
phases of the moon the illuminated portion of the moon seen by the observer.
revolution Revolution is the movement of an orbiting body completely around another object, such as a star or a planet. The Earth revolves around the sun in 365.25 days.
rotation Rotation is the time it takes for Earth to rotate completely around once on its axis completing a full day (24 hours). Rotation causes day and night to occur.
third quarter moon Third quarter occurs after a full moon. The phase of the moon in which one half of the moon is illuminated as the moon is waning.
tides the rise and fall of the water in the ocean along the shore.
