metamorphic rock | forms when rocks are exposed to high heat from the Earth's mantle and high pressure |
sedimentary rock | forms from layers of sediment and once living organisms that have undergone compaction and cementation |
magma | hot, melted rock found below or within the Earth's crust |
sediment | small pieces of broken rock, minerals, and the remains of plants and animals |
weathering | the process of breaking down or dissolving rock |
erosion | the transportation of sediment from one place to another by natural forces like wind or water. |
compaction | sediment being compressed or smashed together due to the pressure from the layers above |
cementation | sediment being stuck or glued together by minerals |
deposition | the laying down of sediment carried by wind, flowing water, the sea, or ice. |
