Momentum
Term | Definition |
---|---|
momentum | The product of the mass and velocity of an object. Sometimes referred to as the "quantity of motion". |
impulse | The product of the force and the time over which the force acts on an object. Results in a change in momentum. |
system | A set of objects chosen to be part of a model. |
closed System | A system in which the mass doesn't change (no matter is allowed to enter or leave) |
isolated System | A system on which the net external force is zero. |
law of conservation of momentum | The total momentum of all objects interacting with one another remains constant (unchanged) |
elastic collision | A collision in which two objects don't stick together, but bounce off each other. (Momentum is still conserved) |
inelastic collision | A collision in which two objects stick together after colliding . We sometimes call these "hit and stick" collisions. (Momentum is still conserved) |
average force | The average of differing amounts of force that act on an object during a collision |
