Term | Definition |
---|---|
Cause | An event or process that leads to a result or change. |
Effect | A result or change that happens because of an event or process. |
Equal | The same in quantity, size, degree, or value. |
Collision | The moment when two objects hit each other. |
Exert | To apply a force. |
Force | A push or a pull that can change the motion of an object. |
Friction | A force between an object and the surface it is moving over. |
Infer | To reach a conclusion using evidence and reasoning. |
Kinetic Energy | The energy that an object has because it is moving. |
Potential Energy | The energy that an object has because it is not moving; stored. |
Mass | The amount of matter (atoms) that makes up an object. |
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
Opposite | Acting or going in the reverse direction. |
Speed | How fast an object is moving. |
Velocity | Speed in a particular direction. |
Newton | Unit of measurement of force. |
Net Force | The combination of all forces acting on an object |
Newton's First Law | An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. AKA - The Law of Inertia! |
Newton's Second Law | F=ma or Force equals mass times acceleration. Unbalanced forces cause objects to accelerate (speed up or slow down). |
Newton's Third Law | For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force. |
Inertia | The tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion |
