Term | Definition |
---|---|
Bond | A link between atom |
Reaction | The process by which atoms are rearranged to form a new substance. |
Energy level | Fixed distances from the nucleus of an atom where electrons may be found |
Groups | Columns on the periodic table |
Ions | Atoms that have a charge due to the gain or loss of electrons. |
Periods | Rows on the periodic table |
Valence electrons | Electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom. |
Products | a substance that is formed as the result of a chemical reaction |
Reactants | substances initially present in a chemical reaction |
Covalent Bond | A force that holds atoms together by sharing electrons. |
Electronegativity | a chemical property that describes the power of an atom in a molecule to attract electrons to itself |
Ionic Bond | A chemical bond formed between two ions with opposite charges. |
Polar Covalent Bond | a covalent bond in which the atoms have an unequal attraction for electrons and so the sharing is unequal. |
Nonpolar covalent bond | a covalent bond in which the atoms have an equal attraction for electrons and so the sharing is equal. |
Atomic Number | Number of protons in an atom. |
Combustion | A chemical reaction between a substance and oxygen. (burning) |
Hydrocarbon | Compound that consists only of carbon and hydrogen |
Chemical Formula | a notation used by scientists to show the number and type of atoms present in a molecule |
Coefficient | The number IN FRONT of a chemical formula indicating how many molecules are present. |
Subscript | The little number to the right and below of an element symbol, telling how many are present in 1 molecule. |
Law of Conservation of Matter | Matter cannot be created nor destroyed |
Polyatomic Ion | Ion composed of 2 or more atoms that act as a unit. |
Reactivity | the tendency of a substance to undergo chemical reactions. |
Transition Metals | elements in groups 3 thru 12 (B groups) of the periodic table. |
acid | Substance that releases H+ ion in solution. |
aqueous solution | solution using water as the solvent |
base | substance that releases OH- in solution |
concentration | amount of substance in a given amount of solution |
indicator | substance that provides a visible sign of the concentration of an ion. |
titration | process used to determine the concentration of a solution |
