How are drugs classified? by the chemical composition, how they work, and the disease they treat
Generic Name reflects the chemical name, but in shorter form
Brand Name the name the manufacturer uses to market the drug
Indications the reasons for administering a medication or performing a treatment
Contra-indications a factor that prevents the use of a medication or treatment
Dose the amount of a drug to be administered at one time
Mechanism of Action how a drug works
Effects the desired results of administration of a medication
Side Effects effects that are not desired and that ocur in addition to the desired effects
Drugs the chemical substances that cause changes, physical or emotional, in an individual
Medicine a drug used to prevent, treat, or cure an illness or pain
3 Qualities of a Medicine effectiveness, safety, and side effects
Prescription written order by the doctor
Over the Counter medicine that can be puchased without a prescription
FDA Food and Drug Administration; decides the saftery of drugs
Herbal Medicines considered drugs, but not FDA regulated
Analgesics relieve pain
Antihistamines help allergies
Antibiotics kill bacteria
Antacids relieve heartburn
Sublingual under the tongue
Oral the drug is swallowed and absorbed through the stomach and intestinal tract
