Resistance & Revolution

TermDefinition
Mecca The religious capital of Saudi Arabia and the Muslim world.
Ummah Refers to the whole Muslim world, or the community of believers.
Hadith the collected traditions of the Prophet Muhammad, based on his sayings and actions.
Qur'an The sacred book of Islam that is the basis of Muslim religion. Muslims believe that Allah gave the words of the Qur'an to the prophet Muhammad. The Qur'an is written in Arabic.
Constitution of Medina expanded the definition of the ummah to include non-Muslims (such as Jews and nearby clans). Was created to preserve the early Muslim community, end longstanding tensions and fights warring clans.
Islam a religion founded by Muhammad. Its holy book is called the Qur'an.
Prophet a person who predicts the future.
Day of Judgement when Allah will decide how people will spend their afterlife.
Collective Responsibility to reach social and political agreements to protect the community as a whole (Muslims and non-Muslims)
Caliphate government under Islamic leadership
Sunni believe Abu Bakr was the right leader
Shi'a believe Ali (Muhammad’s cousin) should have been the successor after his death.
Rashidun (632-661 CE) had four caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar ibn Khattab, Uthman Ibn Affan, and Ali as the fourth caliph. The third and fourth caliphs were assassinated by rebels.
Umayyad emerged after the collapse of the Rashidun Caliphate and was characterized by hereditary elections and territorial expansion and became one of the largest unitary states in history and one of the few to ever extend direct rule across three continents.
Abbasid successfully overthrew the Umayyads dynasty in 750 CE and supported non-Arab Muslims, moving the capital to Baghdad, currently the capital of modern-day Iraq.
Sharia law means “the way” or “path to water,” and the term generally means the way Muslims can lead their best life following Allah/God’s guidance.
House of Wisdom gathered scientists and mathematicians to translate earlier works and build upon that foundational knowledge.
Islamic Golden Age was a period of cultural, economic, and scientific flourishing in the history of Islam, traditionally dated from the 8th century to the 14th century.
Jizya is a tax paid by non-Muslims to their Muslim rulers and was expanded by the Umayyad Caliphate.
Tariff a government tax on goods that come into a country; duty.
Resistance the opposing power of one force against another.
Massacre the killing of a large number of people or animals in a cruel and violent manner.
Domestic of the country one is in; not imported.
Foreign in, from, or having to do with a country that is not one's own.
Policy a set of rules or a plan that is used as a guide for action.
Consolidation a merger, union, or combination, as of organizations or debt payments.
Diffusion the spreading or wide scattering of something.
Architecture The act or process of designing buildings, or the profession of an architect.
Immigration the act of coming to live permanently in a new country.
Sourcing the start or cause of something.
Conquest something gained by conquering, such as land or riches.
