Unit 3 Review CH121

Lewis dot structures, VSEPR, Molecular and Electron Geometry

TermDefinition
Molecular Geometry Determines the shape of a molecule by using bonds only
Electron Geometry Determines the shape of a molecule when including all electron groups (bonds and lone pairs(central atom only))
Electron Group This can either be a single bond, double bond, triple bond, or a lone pair of electrons.
Lone Pair valence electrons that are not shared with another molecule
Lewis Structure simplified 2-D repesentation of valence electrons in a molecule
VSEPR Model used to predict the geometry of individual molecules from the number of electron pairs surrounding their central atoms.
Formal Charge the charge assigned to an atom in a molecule. *sum of all THESE in a molecule should equal 0
Resonance Structures Multiple versions of a lewis structure for a polyatomic molecule/ion
Hybridization the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new orbitals with different energies and shapes than the original orbitals. (to find this we look at bonds and lone pairs (on central atom))
Valence Electrons an electron in the outer shell associated with an atom, and that can participate in the formation of a chemical bond

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
