Unit 3 Review CH121
Lewis dot structures, VSEPR, Molecular and Electron Geometry
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Molecular Geometry | Determines the shape of a molecule by using bonds only |
Electron Geometry | Determines the shape of a molecule when including all electron groups (bonds and lone pairs(central atom only)) |
Electron Group | This can either be a single bond, double bond, triple bond, or a lone pair of electrons. |
Lone Pair | valence electrons that are not shared with another molecule |
Lewis Structure | simplified 2-D repesentation of valence electrons in a molecule |
VSEPR Model | used to predict the geometry of individual molecules from the number of electron pairs surrounding their central atoms. |
Formal Charge | the charge assigned to an atom in a molecule. *sum of all THESE in a molecule should equal 0 |
Resonance Structures | Multiple versions of a lewis structure for a polyatomic molecule/ion |
Hybridization | the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new orbitals with different energies and shapes than the original orbitals. (to find this we look at bonds and lone pairs (on central atom)) |
Valence Electrons | an electron in the outer shell associated with an atom, and that can participate in the formation of a chemical bond |
